We can’t believe #MyDundeeChristmas is about to kick off, we are so excited to see your posts.

Although a lot of you will be familiar with social media challenges, we wanted to do a little post about how to get the most out of #MyDundeeChristmas and how to encourage engagement on your posts.

Top tips to encourage engagement during #MyDundeeChristmas

  1. Make sure you are tagging the ‘right people’ in each post you share during the challenge please tag @jillyjillydesign, @mafaldamedia & @etsydundee and the guest host (on the days there is one) If we are tagged in your posts we will share them across our instagram stories which will drive more people to your own Instagram!

  2. Ask a question - this encourages your followers to engage with your content.

Example: on Day 28 ‘I made’ you can share something that you have made and ask : ‘Who would love to try this?’ Or ‘Who would you gift this to?’ Or ‘Who would you like to share this with?’
Example: on day 23 ‘I’m giving to…’ you can share a donation you are making this Christmas (Foodbank etc) and ask: ‘Who are you giving to this year?’ Or ‘What do you like to give to the Foodbank?’

Asking a question creates a relationship between you and your followers, they are more likely to become invested in you and your business if you create this relationship with them.

  3. Encourage people to ‘tag a friend’ This is similar to asking a question. Asking people to tag someone in your comments, this drives new people to your Instagram who are more likely to become followers or customers if they are already engaging with you.

  4. Plan, plan and plan. 30 days of content is a lot to come up with, so it's important to have an idea of what you are posting before each day arrives. JillyJilly has created a downloadable planner (you can also print this) which will help you plan your content ideas and stay on track, you can get it here.

  5. Schedule! You can get free accounts with a scheduler which will mean you can schedule your post in advance and you don’t have to remember to post every day - try Hootsuite and go for 3 accounts or less for free.

  6. Use stories. Engagement on stories can be really high, often more than on your grid posts, so make sure you are sharing your #MyDundeeChristmas posts on stories too AND remember to tag us in your stories too so we can share them on our Instagram!

  7. HAVE FUN - this is supposed to be a fun social media challenge, so make sure you are enjoying creating content, engaging with your followers and building your online community!

Follow @mafaldamedia for more social media tips.

It's just one week to go to the start of #MyDundeeChristmas - we've loved hearing from those of you who are planning on taking part! Many of you will be familiar with social media challenges like March Meet the Maker and Inktober, but for those of you who aren't we've got a mini series of blog posts coming up explaining how to get the most from a challenge like this. If you are taking part it's a good idea to shout about it - the more people who join in, the bigger the reach we'll have as a hashtag and community.

In this post we're looking at interpreting prompts! There is no right or wrong and we want you to get creative, make the prompt fit you and your brand. If you're really stuck, don't worry about skipping a day and just move on to the next one.

  1. Hello! Introduce yourself and tell us what you do. If you have a team then you could include them too, even any four legged friends.
  2. My View Today. Where are you working from today? Or are you taking some time off? Is this your usual view, a favourite place or maybe you're having a duvet day!
  3. Winter Fuel. What keeps you going and feeling toasty? It could be a warming meal, your favourite hot drink (mulled wine for us please!) or anything else that gives you a boost.
  4. Inspired By. Who or what inspires you? You could share the love and give someone a shout out or maybe you have a sketchbook filled with inspirational doodles... or are you a Pinterest addict?
  5. Remember, Remember. It's the fifth of November! If you're going to see some fireworks you could snap a pic. Or maybe it's something people should remember about your brand or how you keep organised.
  6. Coffee Break. What does your break time look like? Tea or coffee? Do you have a reusable cup or favourite place for taking a break?
  7. It's all in the Details. Here's a chance to show what makes your brand unique, show off your attention to detail and any thoughtful touches.
  8. Celebration Time. What goals have you achieved recently? How do you celebrate the little wins in your business?
  9. Made in Dundee. If you're a Dundee maker/designer this is an easy one! You could also share something you've bought that was made in Dundee or a local supplier.
  10. Self Care. How do you unwind? What do you do to look after yourself or maybe you have a favourite treat?
  11. Behind the Scenes. This is a chance to share something your followers don't always see, it could be part of your process or some part of running your businesses that you don't often mention as it's not so glam!
  12. Dundee Favourites. Who or what are your Dundee favourites? It could be a place or person, Instagram account, shop or cafe - something that you love related to Dundee.
  13. My Community. Do you have a community or network that supports you? Or it could be friends that cheer you on and understand the struggles of running a small business.
  14. Workspace. Share where you work! Whether that's a desk, the kitchen table, a studio, your favourite coffee shop, we want to have a nosey at all those workspaces.
  15. Christmas Lights. It's Light Night! Have you spotted any festive lights? Maybe you have a favourite window display in town?
  16. Festive Market. It's market season! There's loads of fab events happening in Dundee over the coming weeks. Are you taking part in any? Share today if so! If not, will you be shopping at any? Do you have a favourite market or?
  17. Fab Feedback. It's lovely to receive positive customer feedback but we don't always remember to share it with the world. Today is the day to shout about it! Have you received any testimonials or 5 star feedback recently?
  18. Perfect Present. Do you sell something that makes the perfect gift, if so, who for? Maybe you've found somewhere to buy amazing gifts from? Or you could drop a hint today!
  19. What I'm Listening To... What do you listen to while you work? Podcasts, radio, playlists? It's a great chance to get some new recommendations from everyone's shares.
  20. Mince Pehs. What's your favourite festive sweet treat? A classic mince pie? Or something different? Do you like to do Christmas baking or just buy something yummy for your tea break?
  21. Sustainable Christmas. Are you making any swaps this year? Maybe you've made changes to your packaging or gift wrapping or your products are a sustainable version of something mass produced that people buy at Christmas.
  22. Vintage Dundee. Take a trip down memory lane or take a walk down town and look around - this could be about local history or simply a fab vintage find from our city.
  23. I'm Giving To... Today we're talking about giving something back. We're encouraging everyone to donate to a local cause and take a snap to remind others to do so too, whether that's a donation to the Food Bank, Togs for Tots to Teens or any another charity we hope you'll get involved.
  24. Plastic Free. Have you made any changes to go plastic free? Whether it's in your business or personal life this is a great chance to share any tips. Maybe you're making changes to Christmas gift wrap or decorations this year?
  25. Festive Decor. What festive decorations have you spotted in Dundee? Do you make any Christmas decor or love a DIY project? Let's get Christmassy today; it's nearly December!
  26. Hands at Work. What are you working on today? This could be a fun prompt to make a time-lapse video for. If you make things by hand then we'd love to see your process!
  27. Plant Power. Today we're celebrating the power of plants! Whether that's a plant based treat, nature inspired product or festive foliage is up to you.
  28. I made... If you're a creative business this will be an easy one. If not, how can you finish the sentence? I made... progress on a project, a to do list? Whatever you like!
  29. Shop Local. We're celebrating all the local shops today now that most people will have their Christmas shopping well underway. It's so important to shop small this time of year, so share your favourites!
  30. Thank you. Today is all about thanking customers or anyone else that you appreciate. And of course, thank you for taking part!

We hope this has been helpful. So now you can get your planner downloaded (and printed if you prefer working on paper) and start jotting down your ideas!

#MarchMeetTheMaker is an annual Instagram challenge organised by Joanne Hawker (designer, illustrator and Somerset Etsy Team Captain). It's a chance for makers to share their story and be part of a community for the month of March and give your social media a boost in the process. Lots of the Dundee Etsy Team took part so we thought we'd share a few snapshots on here.

This month I’m taking part in #marchmeetthemaker by @joannehawker . Each day throughout the month of March (hopefully) I will share information with you about me, my work and my small business. Day 1 on the list is my favourite thing to make - for me this has to be my paintings. I enjoy painting colourful, playful characters and abstract worlds. My work is quite feminine and dreamy and I tend to work with gouache and acrylic paint. □ #marchmeetthemaker #marchmeetthemaker2019 #coramantic #art #artist #painting #illustration #artwork #instaart #etsydundee

I’ll be taking part in #marchmeetthemaker by @joannehawker the 1st prompt is #favouritetomake □ I love it when customers put their own spin on my products. Did you know that my cassette tape necklace can be customised in any colour your heart desires? Just look for the ‘custom colours’ in the drop down menu and add in the notes which colours you would like. This one was made for @superspectrumgirl and if you follow her (it’s highly recommended) you’ll know these colours are very ‘on brand’ □□. Also @cursedsummon very kindly whipped up the background for me on photoshop thank you! . . . . #meetthemaker2019 #etsydundee #meetthemakerchallenge #favouriteproduct #cassettetapes #customise #commissions #80saesthetic #90kids #greenandpink #lasercutacrylic #acrylicjewellery #plasticjewellery #lasercutart #supportsmallbusiness #communityovercompetition #scottishdesigner #retroaesthetic #bemoreweird #wearetheweirdosmister

I’m going in! The Instagram challenge #marchmeetthemaker @joannehawker. This will definitely help me to post more! Day 1 is favourite to make. I love making our very popular cigar boxes. Seeing the lovely personalisations is amazing and knowing something we’ve made is a part of someone’s big day is very heartwarming □ #shopsmall #laserorigins #dundee #etsy #etsyshop #etsysellers #smallbiz #wedding #love #personalised #weddinggifts #usher #bestman #groomsman #tuxedo #weddingparty #etsydundee

Sorry I've been falling behind again! Day 16 of #marchmeetthemaker is workspace. My little JillyJilly studio is in our home but I try and keep it separate so I can close the door at the end of the day. I've been feeling like I need a bit of a rejig though â–¡

So, this month I’m going to attempt to join in with @joannehawker #marchmeetthemaker and the first prompt is Favourite to Make. I am terrible at making decisions like this but I will commit to saying that anything neon is my fave □□ I’m looking forward to checking out everyone else who’s taking part! Day 2 of #marchmeetthemaker 〰️ How it all started ✏️. It all started as a child. This is a photo of my first set of watercolour pencils. They are well over 30 years old now and I remember the day my dad bought them for me. I was very excited that you could use water with pencils to paint. They were very expensive and as we never had much money, these were a luxury to be treasured. I’ve drawn for as long as I can remember and would spend hours drawing in my sketchbook. I went on to study at #djcad and since graduating I’ve worked in a variety of art related jobs whilst continuing to develop my own illustration work. #supportsmallbusiness #creativecommunity #makersrevolution #meetthemaker #illustrator #illustration #scottishillustrator #brawillustrations #cuteillustration #childhood #80s #tonyhart #colouredpencils #nostalgia #scotland #dundee #colourful #creative

This year I’m taking part in @joannehawker ‘s challenge #marchmeetthemaker Day 4 is “Tools & Materials” . I think If I attempted to gather all my hoarded art materials together it would make me cry hah. So here is some to represent areas of my tools of creativity. My camera, notebook, paper, paintbrushes, paint pens, ink and sharpie markers □ . #marchmeetthemaker2019 #tools #materials #eilidhmorrisart #eilidhmorris #dundee #artist #artistlife #artistmaterials #posca #toolsandmaterials #meetthemaker #behindthescenes #writer #artist #writingcommunity #writing #artislife #abstractart #etsydundee #sharpies #abstractpainting @etsydundee
